Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing involves the use of a laser (Erbium YAG or Carbon Dioxide) to remove the outer surface of the skin. This is a highly controlled method where the energy from laser light is applied to skin cells. The energy is taken up by the cells which are vaporized, thereby allowing the surgeon to remove thin layers of skin a little at a time.
The thickness of facial skin varies depending on the area of the face treated. If the deeper layers of skin are kept intact, the skin cell layers can regenerate from below, encouraging more organized cellular growth and leading to younger looking skin. It also helps smooth out fine wrinkles.
The application of the laser can lead to minor discomfort and some low-level pain similar to that of a superficial burn, which will be helped by adequate preparation and the application of a post-operative soothing cream.
A detailed post-operative skin care regimen is necessary, including daily cleansing and application of post-operative emollient cream. The treated areas will remain reddened and raw for almost 2 weeks. Following regeneration of skin, the new skin will remain reddened for some 4 ? 6 weeks, and will require protection from sunlight / ultraviolet radiation for 8 ? 12 months.
Patients with darker skin may be at higher risk of having pigment or colour changes and pre-treatment testing on a small inconspicuous area is advisable.
Laser resurfacing can be used in combination with other cosmetic procedures of the face, including facelift and brow-lift surgery.
